This powerful photo of a baby girl surrounded by hundreds of syringes, arranged in a heart shape, reflects just how much IVF parents go through to have a family.

And just how much those babies are loved.

The image was shared by US fertility clinic network Sher Fertility Institute this week with the caption: ‘Wow, what a photo. Thank you to Sher Fertility St. Louis and Dr. Dayal patient Angela, who shows the true definition of love that went into making this gorgeous new baby girl.’

The picture reflects the often long and difficult journey women go through in an effort to conceive, including the multiple daily hormone injections a mum will give herself.

Dr Molina Dayal, who treated the mum, told ABC News that the picture doesn’t show all the syringes she had to use. She had, Dr Dayal said, been through multiple IVF cycles over 18 months.

Mum Angela, who asked that only her first name was given, said she wanted the photo to be shared to tell other couples going through IVF to ‘hang in there’.

‘The needles were the easy part. It was the emotional struggle, the ups and downs, that really took a toll,’ she said. ‘I’m single and waited a long time for a husband. By that time it was difficult to get pregnant.’

The photo has been shared thousands of times and seen by almost half a million people.

Others are sharing their emotional stories on the fertility clinic’s Facebook page.

‘Didn’t even tell my husband what this was, I just handed him my phone. I saw tears form in his eyes as he probably also went through the memories of countless nights, over our four year journey, that he gave me shots. We finally were successful with twin boys and I’ve never been happier!’ wrote Sara Husson.

‘Such a powerful photo. It brings tears to my eyes. We’ve gone through 2 cycles of IVF and still no take home baby,’ posted one woman.

Others have shared pictures of their own IVF ‘miracles’. ‘Every blood draw, every shot, every moment so worth it,’ wrote one parent.

Lisa Stark, director of communications for Sher Fertility Institute, said she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the reaction to the photo. ‘We felt like it was a provocative, emotional photo that captures the joy and pain of IVF,’ she said.
