A terminally ill Star Wars fan has died just a few days after being granted his last wish – to see the new film before it opened in cinemas.
Daniel Fleetwood, of Houston, Texas, knew he was unlikely to see the franchise’s latest instalment ahead of its US release on 18 December.
He had an aggressive form of cancer and doctors gave him just months to live.
A social media campaign, using the hashtag “ForceForDaniel”and supported by stars such as Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the film, won Mr Fleetwood his dying wish.
On 5 November, the 32-year-old lifelong fan was shown an unfinished version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Mr Fleetwood’s wife Ashley said on Tuesday morning that he had died, writing on Facebook: “Daniel put up an amazing fight to the very end.
“He is now one with God and with the force.
“He passed in his sleep and in peace.
“He will always be my idol and my hero.”
Just a few hours earlier she had written about her hatred for the disease that was killing her husband.
She wrote: “Hearing your loved one writhing in pain, asking for God to just kill him and take him to heaven, trying four heavy duty sedation shots and he is still moaning and writhing in anxiety and pain.
“My mental anguish can’t compare to the pain and anxiety Daniel must be in right now. Prayers please. We need it bad.”
